Development Of Renewable Energy – Future Trend

12/17/2020

From the past few years, the investment in renewable energy projects has attracted the attention of many domestic and foreign investors. Statistics of BIDV's Research Institute show that if the total renewable energy capacity reached about 303 MW in 2016, this figure has been estimated to increase more than 20 times by 2020, reaching about 7,000 MW.

In the coming time, the investment in wind and solar power projects is estimated to be going to continue growing strongly. According to data provided by Ministry of Industry and Trade, currently 187 wind power plant projects with a total capacity of about 11,687 MW and 137 solar power projects with a total capacity of 13,618 MW have been added to the planning; 312 wind power projects with a total capacity of 78,035 MW and 331 solar power projects with a capacity of 336,581 MW have been being proposed by localities.

However, according to the survey results of independent research institutes as well as reflected by the investors, the investment and development of renewable energy projects have been facing many difficulties and problems.

Moreover, many investment projects in wind and solar power sectors have been licensed or transferred to foreign investors right after completed, while there are different provisions for the domestic and foreign investors in market access for conditional business sectors, as well as in areas and regions affecting national defense and security.

Vietnam is considered as a country with rich potential in renewable energy (RE), but the exploitation of renewable energy in Vietnam has not been commensurate with its potentials and strengths. In order to help enterprises  invest and exploit RE better, in the coming time, the Government will consider preferential policies for capable enterprises such as in capital, economic tools, and support capacity, not asking for but thinking "for the winner"
